WORLD BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 1
History makers, high scoring games and shock results.
Day 1 of the World Bowls Championships had it all. As you'd expect the World Class event had players from all nations step up and play some big shots and one or two luck ones maybe.. but that's all in the game.
Week one sees the para events play at Broadbeach Bowling Club. These players are making history as this is the first time these disciplines have been included in the Lawn Bowls World Championships. The men's pairs and triples got underway across the Gold Coast as well as the women's singles and fours.
Para and VI: Birmingham 2022 Gold Medalists R. Lenton & P. Wilson (Scotland) took two wins from two in the Women's Para Pairs while the pairing of D. Delgado & J. Reynolds (Australia) took two convincing wins in the men's para pairs. In the Vision-Impaired Mixed pairs there were mixed results, M. Homer (P. Homer), H. Scholtz (G. Newcombe) - South Africa and J. Hudson (R. Hudson), J. Fehlberg (C. Fehlberg) - Australia remain unbeaten.
Women's Singles: Gold medal favourite Ellen Ryan (Australia) took two strong victories on day one against Thailand and Falkland Islands giving her a strong start. Section 2 sees all four of the British home nations in one section, Katherine Rednall (England) currently sits at the top of the group with a shot difference of +35, Scotland's Emma McIntyre close behind sitting in third place with a shot difference of +26. The experienced Kelly McKerihen (Canada) took all three wins on day 1 as well as USA's Anne Nunes who sits at the top of her section.
Men's Pairs: Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Gold medalists D. Salmon & J. Breen (Wales) had a strong start winning all three games with impressive score margins. A. Mckeown & G. Kelly (Ireland) top section 2 of the men's pairs. E. Morris & S. Tolchard (England) take impressive wins on day 1 against Netherlands, Japan and Turkiye.
Women's Fours: The Canadian side of J. Cooper, B. Van Steijn, E. Boyd, J. Kos have a successful first day picking up wins against Norfolk Islands and Birmingham 2022 Gold Medalists India, in their last game they almost took the win against the Australian side finishing with a 10-12 loss. S. Tolchard, J. L. Marshall, L. Kuhler, A. Pharaoh from England had a 36-4 win against Turkiye and a 27-6 win against medal hopefuls from Malaysia.
Men's Triples: India's N. Singh, C. Kumar Singh, D. Kumar take 3/3 wins on Day 1, including a 22-14 win against Australia's C. Wedlock, A. Sherriff, C. Healey.
